Ara'Kus - Black & White

Here is the black and white series that I took during the Ara'Kus concert friday.  Awesome concert.  My son was apprehensive - not his type of music (mine) - but he really enjoyed it - particularly the sword fighting. (click on a photo for a larger version - easier to view).

Another photograph taken with my Nikon D800.  This was taken at ISO 1600, f3.8 with a shutter speed of 1/20s.    Noise levels are beyond acceptable.  No complaints here.

Raquel's Tribute

I created this video as a on-line birthday card for my wife, whom I met in 1985.   This photo-montage begins with the very first photograph I have of her on through our life.  

Star Trails - Fort Casey

This is a 15 minute exposure at ISO200.   I used a Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G lens set at 17mm an aperture of f/5. I used a Nikon speedlight to illuminate the trees and tent however a ferry showed up at the dock behind me and added additional unplanned light, hence the slight reddish tint on the left side of the photograph coming from the ferry.

Tree Climber

I could hear the chain echoing through the trees as I walked around my property, but was unable to locate the person using it.   Sound travels quite a distance and I had confirmed that no-one was on the vacant property next to mine helping themselves to some timber.   I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye as I headed back and about 130 feet up this douglas fir tree was this guy limbing his way up to the top.  Unfortunately I had to rush back to get my camera so missed photographing his aerial stunt.   After limbing a few branches he proceeded to swing back and forth on the next branch above him like a gymnast.  No fear I guess.  So I took these shots with my 200mm f2.8 - I'm guessing I was 100-150 yards away.  He was on a tree at least 2 acres from my property. 

Yamaha FJ1200

Strolling through the memories as I rediscover forgotten negatives.   The Epson V500 scanner has been working overtime recovering the photographs taken during the age of analog photography.   The first photograph was taken shortly after purchasing the 1989 Yamaha FJ1200 in front of my apartment just off of 65th avenue in the Ravenna district of Seattle.   The photograph below is my niece and nephew, Faye and Nathan, out in front of a cousin's home in Daly City, California.   I had just arrived after a 12 hour ride down from Seattle.

Summer of 1985

Another photograph retrieved from box of archived negatives.  I took this photograph in 1985 in Portland, Oregon of a local "new wave" band whose name has been lost in my memory.   It was taken with Fuji HR100 speed film using a Contax with a 50mm lens.   My first and last foray into concert photography.   I just remember that I really enjoyed this band, just wish I could remember their name.

Black Hawk

The Navy was practicing landings a few days ago.    They were approximately 100 yards off my office - a bit distracting.   So I took this photograph as they came closest during the circle back to the landing area.   This activity usually is a prelude to the arrival of the air craft carrier.

Last View

Probably the last time I'll see this view.  I climbed to the top of the digester building yesterday, which if the air craft carrier was in the bay, would be just high enough to view the deck ~ 200ft.   Pulp mill has been shutdown since Dec 21st - all is quiet and only 7 of us remain.   So I carried my camera and documented a few of the areas that I worked in.

Came around the corner at work yesterday to run into this 2" fitting spraying water everywhere.

Photograph was taken in the Walker Valley.   Focal length was 17mm, an aperature of  f5.6 and 1s shutter speed at ISO 200.

So, I've been looking at this photograph for the past 15 minutes and I am just absolutely dumbfounded.   

Homestead - Grand Tetons

This is probably the most photographed barn in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.   It was built around 1910 by Thomas Alma Moulton.    I photographed it early in the morning a few hours after sunrise.   It is easy to locate, just off the main highway in the area called Antelope Flats.

I like black and white, but here is the original color version.

Raquel and Cherry Blossom 2

Raquel and Cherry Blossoms

I took this photograph of Raquel earlier this afternoon at the University of Washington amongst their cherry trees.    So why did I convert it to black and white when there were millions of colorful cherry blossoms to be seen?   I'm sure you'll think it trivial, but it seemed to convey a stronger emotion in black and white.   The sun bursting behind the branches of one very old cherry tree and Raquel standing out in her dark toned clothing on the brick walkway.    Yes I could have left well enough alone, the photograph was very nice as it was.   But, again, I think this one stands out more knowing that there is all of these brilliant cherry blossoms in stark white.
