This eagle was perched on the branch in a shallow wet land area near Ft. Casey.    I was able to get within about 100 yards before it decided that I was close enough.

Another photograph taken with my Nikon D800.  This was taken at ISO 1600, f3.8 with a shutter speed of 1/20s.    Noise levels are beyond acceptable.  No complaints here.

Spider Meadow - Nighttime Photograph

So this is my first star shot using my new Nikon D800 camera.  The lens I chose is an inexpensive Tamron 28-200mm telephoto that I take on backpacking trips.   Although it is not as fast as my Nikon f2.8, it is significantly lighter - a necessity on a trip like this.    The focal length was set at 28mm, f/5.6 and exposed for 30 seconds at ISO 1600.   I used a rock to set my camera on as I didn't backpack with a tripod this time.   The noise level for this camera is amazing - very difficult to distinguish compared to my D300 which would have been extremely grainy above ISO 1200.

The moon had not yet crested the peaks, but its' light illuminated the land scape nicely.   Next time I'll bring a tripod and my shutter release so that I can take some longer timed exposures.  

Star Trails - Fort Casey

This is a 15 minute exposure at ISO200.   I used a Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G lens set at 17mm an aperture of f/5. I used a Nikon speedlight to illuminate the trees and tent however a ferry showed up at the dock behind me and added additional unplanned light, hence the slight reddish tint on the left side of the photograph coming from the ferry.

Capea nemoralis

We had a heavy rain storm late last night.   This morning armed with a cup of coffee I went out to the garden to survey the damage.    Slowly, with intent, this small garden snail sought to cross the second step of the stairs leading to my back deck.    Watching it,  I couldn't help wonder how long it took for this creature to spread across planet Earth.    This gives a whole new meaning to patience.

Westport 2

The ocean was pretty wild even at low tide.

Saturday, I went razor clamming with the family and a couple of friends along the Pacific Coast just south of Westport, WA.     The water temp was a balmy 45F with rain and wind gusts that picked up the surf and beat you with it.   Although I only got 5 out of my 15 clam limit, our group found a total of 33 of these small morsels.   The photograph was taken using an on-camera speed light which created a more dramatic effect with the background weather.

Jenny Lake and the Grand Tetons

I took this photograph on Kodak Pan-x 100ISO 120 film using my 1937 Zeiss Ikon.   This is Jenny Lake with the Grand Tetons rising up in the background.   The film was purchased at a used camera store in Seattle, so it is unknown how old it was.   In this roll of film, there is clearly repetitive fogging in all of the photographs.    This may be how I processed the film - it has only been 20 years since I last developed B/W negatives, or it is an artifact from the age of the film.   I recently purchased two new rolls of Ilford Delta 100 to try and I still have three more rolls from the Yellowstone - Grand Tetons trip to develop.

Mount St. Helens Revisted

This is a panorama constructed of four photographs I took in 1995 on the North side of the crater and just above Spirit Lake.   Quite a change from the photograph I took in 1980.   I converted it to black and white as the colors in the original negatives didn't scan well.

Steven's Pass

Went snow shoeing at Steven's Pass - about 14" of fresh snow from previous night.

Practice

These two bucks were in the neighbors yard this evening grazing on cedar and grass.  Timing was nice when they started play jousting.   These two and a doe had just crossed the road when I came home from work.   I had enough time to get my camera.   I then intercepted them coming back into our yard about 15 minutes later.   Nice end to a long week.

Mount St. Helens - 1980

I was fourteen years old, camping about 30 miles south of Mount St. Helens the day it erupted in May 18, 1981.     The Silver Star district camporee in Columbia Pacific Council (now Cascade Pacific Council), was winding down so my father took me up to Larch Mountain to view the eruption.   It was amazing how much ash was in the air, although at that time the ash had yet to hit us.   That would come the next day as our home became blanketed in it.    It is too bad I didn't think to take a photograph of Mount Hood for contrast so that you can see how the ash masked the details of the mountain.   Armed with a Leica flex and 55 mm lens, I took this photograph.    Unfortunately the negatives have been lost to time.   At fourteen, I wasn't as organized with my negatives and photographs as I am now, although some negatives have survived from those days, not the ones I find important today.   I scanned this photograph on a Microtek scanner and despite by thorough cleaning of the glass plate, dust was still visible in the scanned result.   So, with a little clean-up, here is the scanned result.

Grand Teton

This is a photograph I took near Jenny Lake of the Grand Teton to the left and Mount Owen to the right.   The Grand Teton is 13,770 ft tall, while Mount Owen is only 12,928 ft.   Putting these in perspective relative to local peaks, Mount Baker is only 10,778 ft tall, and Mount Rainer is 14,411 ft.

Moon

Moon was out tonight against a fairly star less night.   No clouds or wind, so perfect conditions for photographing the moon.   This shot was taken at f8, 1/125s using a Nikon D300 with 400mm f5.6 lens.

Bison 2

Prior to the previous photograph, this was the view I had as this rather large Bison made its' way through the lodge pole pine.    Marvelous and majestic creatures and very dangerous.

This rather large Bison is about 20 yards from me.  He came wondering down through the trees, munching on pine needles - seemingly oblivious to my presence.   However, after taking this and a couple of additional photographs - I decided it would be best that we part ways.    He was striking this very stoic - nickel like pose anyway.

Homestead - Grand Tetons

This is probably the most photographed barn in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.   It was built around 1910 by Thomas Alma Moulton.    I photographed it early in the morning a few hours after sunrise.   It is easy to locate, just off the main highway in the area called Antelope Flats.
